Manchester United transfer news LIVE Jurrien Timber updates and Frenkie de Jong to Man United latest

Manchester United and other Premier League sides are able to do business after the transfer window reopened.

Erik ten Hag wants to sign a new centre-back, at least one central midfielder and a versatile forward as part of his much-needed rebuild after touching down in the UK from Ajax. However, the Old Trafford outfit have already been knocked back by one proposed target.

That comes as Benfica hot-shot Darwin Nunez edges closer to a big-money move to Liverpool.

Jurrien Timber and Frenkie Jong remain top of the shopping list for Ten Hag this summer and both players are well known to the Dutchman from their time together in Amsterdam. Brazilian forward Antony has also emerged as one possible alternative to Nunez after United missed out on the Uruguay player.

Louis van Gaal admitted Jurrien Timber was playing on “his final legs” after the Manchester United target struggled in his latest outing with the Netherlands.

Timber was substituted just after the hour mark as the Dutch had to fight back from 2-0 down against Poland to rescue a 2-2 draw in the Nations League. Davy Klaassen and Denzel Dumfries’ goals saw them fight back after Matty Cash and Piotr Zielinski’s strikes had put the visitors ahead, although former United forward Memphis Depay missed the chance to complete a comeback victory as he missed a stoppage-time penalty.

United fans will no doubt have been watching on with interest, with transfer targets Timber and Frenkie de Jong in action for the Netherlands. Erik ten Hag is eager to reunite with his two former Ajax protégés as he begins his rebuild at Old Trafford.
