Manchester United told why they should ignore Erik ten Hag doubters in their search for new boss

Former Premier League defender Matthew Upson has told Manchester United to ignore those questioning their possible appointment of Erik ten Hag, though he admitted he can understand why some are sceptical.

The Dutch tactician has been interviewed by United as they look to replace Ralf Rangnick. The Manchester Evening News understands that Ten Hag is the club's preferred option and that they are planning to hold further talks with the two-time Eredivisie winner.

Upson believes the style of play Ten Hag would bring to United will be a big plus point as they look to appoint a new boss. However, he did admit he can understand why some are cautious about the move.

"You have to analyse him as a possible fit. He's coached a team to a good level, got a good style of play which I think is important," he told Sky Sports. "Question mark for him, in my opinion, is the size of the club in terms of a big club in a top league.

"We know Ajax is a big club in Europe playing in a Dutch league that isn't as competitive as the Premier League. I think that's something to look at but in terms of his coaching credentials. In terms of what he's done at Ajax, I think it's been a huge success; took them to a Champions League semi, a couple of league titles.

"Also, whether this is in the mindset of Manchester United, at the moment, whether it's just getting results and up the table, whether you want a manager who can potentially develop players, I think that's interesting. He's coming from a club which has a rich history of developing talent.
