Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst makes Besiktas admission amid recent transfer links

Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst has admitted that he misses former loan club Besiktas and their supporters.

The Netherlands international, who scored a penalty in Sunday's FA Cup semi-final shootout victory over Brighton & Hove Albion, cut his loan spell with the Turkish heavyweights short in January to return to England and join United. The Reds signed Weghorst from Championship side Burnley on a short-term loan deal until the end of the season to strengthen their forward options.

Weghorst, following Burnley's relegation from the Premier League almost a year ago, joined Besiktas on a season-long loan deal in July and scored nine goals and grabbed four assists in just 18 appearances. Despite the original terms of his loan stating that he would stay in Turkey for the whole season, the opportunity to join United was just too great.

Weghorst has struggled to have the desired impact at Old Trafford, however, scoring a paltry two goals in 23 matches. Nevertheless, despite lacking the required level of quality, he cannot be faulted for his passion and commitment.

He is unlikely to join United on a permanent basis this summer and it remains unclear what his long-term future holds for him at Burnley, who will wrap up the Championship title with a win over arch-rivals Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday evening. Besiktas have recently been linked with re-signing the 30-year-old and it is possible he could choose to rejoin them, certainly if his glowing praise for their fans is anything to go by.
