Manchester United star tried to defend his teammates after Ipswich - but made them look even worse
"Obviously we conceded two goals, but I never had the feeling they had so many big chances or like they were getting close to our goal."
Matthijs de Ligt spoke candidly after Manchester United's win over Ipswich. While he attempted to defend the team's performance by suggesting Ipswich rarely troubled the United defence, his comment is real cause for concern.
Firstly, it's difficult to argue with the point the Dutchman makes on Ipswich's attacking threat. Andre Onana's goal was hardly under siege even with United down to ten men. Ipswich mustered just one shot on target aside from the two goals scored and, in truth, the backline enjoyed a relatively comfortable night considering United were a man down for more than half the game.
So how on earth did they still manage to concede two goals?

It's no secret that United have struggled for goals this season and so if they're shipping two at home to relegation candidates who don't offer much of a threat then perhaps things are bleaker than we thought.
Ipswich's opener at Old Trafford was a defensive calamity, with Patrick Dorgu kicking off his nightmare evening by failing to spot the onrushing Onana and offering Jaden Philogene the simplest of finishes.
Their second was by no means another to add to the blooper reel, but Onana was caught flat-footed and failed to anticipate Philogene's
