Manchester United signed four players in one day and the most successful was the least expected

In years to come, deadline day in the 2023 transfer window will go down in infamy at Manchester United. A club used to making a splash in the transfer market signed a back-up goalkeeper nobody had heard of, a left-back unwanted at Tottenham, a defensive midfielder who has underwhelmed and a 35-year-old centre-back.

It was a busy end to the transfer window at Carrington, but not one that filled supporters with much hope for the year ahead. The deal to sign Altay Bayindir had been waiting on Dean Henderson's departure, a move that also freed up enough funds to bring in Sofyan Amrabat on loan, with an option to make it permanent.

Sergio Reguilon also arrived as cover for injured left-backs Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, while Jonny Evans, who had been training with the club all summer, signed a one-year deal. With a couple of the months season to go, Bayindir has been restricted to one appearance, while Reguilon played 12 games before returning to Spurs in January. Amrabat has made 21 appearances, of which 13 are starts, but he hasn't done anywhere near enough to suggest his move should be made permanent for £21million.

Of those four deals, it is Evans who has been the biggest success. He has played 23 games, including starting both Manchester derbies, having been selected ahead of Raphael Varane for the Old Trafford fixture. He has also been the most consistent performer of that deadline day quartet.

Evans has certainly played more often than many expected. He was signed as cover after doing a solid enough job in pre-season, where he initially began training with the under-21s.
