Manchester United's season with new defence and Casemiro simulated with great results

With Casemiro confirmed, Manchester United's summer business is really starting to shape the picture that Erik ten Hag has in mind.

Casemiro's £60million transfer from Real Madrid to Man United was confirmed by the club, with the Brazilian officially unveiled at Old Trafford ahead of the 2-1 win over Liverpool. The 30-year-old becomes United's fourth signing of the transfer window, joining Christian Eriksen, Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia through the door.

A midfield enforcer is exactly what Ten Hag needed to add to his squad this summer, and when added into the United starting XI, the Reds could prove a resilient side defensively. Martinez and Malacia both starred in United's win over Liverpool, with Ten Hag's defence receiving lots of praise for their performance against Jurgen Klopp's side.

So, what could happen in the remainder of this season if Ten Hag was to start the same back four and Casemiro on a regular basis? Could United push for a top-four finish and maybe a trophy?

To set up this simulation, we used the Football Manager 2022 editor to update United's squad with the latest transfers and squad updates, whilst also updating the Premier League with the latest results.

Diogo Dalot, Raphael Varane, Martinez and Malacia were the back four of Ten Hag's choice during the simulation with Casemiro sat in front, and all five players made over 50 appearances in all competitions. Martinez played the most, making 51 appearances in total, whilst Varane played the least, featuring 41 times.

Malacia was the only player to register an average rating of under 7 (6.98), whilst Varane (7.14) and Casemiro (7.04) averaged the highest. Martinez
