Manchester United's Raphael Varane explains the difference between his and Pogba's leadership

Manchester United defender Raphael Varane believes it is important to have different variations of leadership within the squad, comparing his style with that of fellow countryman and team-mate Paul Pogba.

The centre-back, who joined United in a big-money deal from Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid last summer, was drafted in to add a world-class presence at centre-back, a winning mentality and a sense of leadership, taking into account his outstanding career.

Varane, who was denied his first United goal by VAR in last Tuesday evening's 1-1 draw with Burnley at Turf Moor, experienced playing alongside a plethora of born leaders during his time at Madrid, including the likes of Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos, meaning that experience has rubbed off on him.

Recently, fellow United ace Pogba, who is out of contract at the end of the season, hailed Varane's leadership qualities, describing him as being like 'water in a storm', whereas the defender considers himself as 'fire' in the same situation, highlighting their differences in character.

Comparing Pogba's leadership type with his own, Varane, who will be hoping to help France defend their World Cup crown in Qatar later this year, has admitted that he finds it beneficial to have different types of characters to offer leadership within the dressing room.

Varane told United's club website : "I think there is different leadership [styles]. Paul is more impulsive and more energetic.

"I am more calm and more analytical and practical things. There are different points of view.

"I think it's important to have, in a team, these different leaderships."
