Manchester United’s Antony left out of Brazil squad in wake of abuse allegations

Manchester United winger Antony has been left out of the Brazil squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers. Earlier this month, three women made allegations of abuse against the 23-year-old in the Brazilian media. Antony strongly denies the accusations and has not been charged or arrested.

In a club statement, United explained that Antony’s return to training would be delayed ‘until further notice’. The player also agreed to take a leave of absence in order to address the allegations made against him.

Prior to the allegations being made, Antony was with the Brazil team ahead of their games against Bolivia and Peru. He was subsequently withdrawn from the squad and has been left out of the latest 23-man group for the next international break.

Brazil manager Fernando Diniz named his squad on Saturday, which included United midfielder Casemiro, as the team prepare to continue their World Cup qualifying campaign. The Selecao host Venezuela on October 12, followed by a trip to Uruguay on October 17.

The decision to not include Antony in the squad was expected, given the allegations made against him and his leave of absence from training. Following United announcing their decision, earlier this month, Antony responded on social media.

He wrote: "I have agreed with Manchester United to take a period of absence while I address the allegations made against me. This was a mutual decision to avoid distraction to my teammates & unnecessary controversy for the club.
