Manchester United receive huge injury boost with first-team midfielder

Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount has returned to first-team training and could return from the sidelines sooner than expected.

Mount started the opening two Premier League games against Fulham and Brighton but he confirmed last month that he'd sustained a muscle injury and was facing a spell out of action.

However, the Manchester Evening News understand Mount has now returned to full training with the team and could be available again this month, which is a boost for United.

Mount's pressing ability was relied upon by Erik ten Hag in the opening fixtures of the campaign and he was a key cog in the team's tweaked pressing structure in attack.

When a player returns to full training at Carrington after an injury, that is usually an indicator they are close to a return to full fitness and Mount should be available for selection again soon.

Speaking in a press conference ahead of facing Barnsley in the Carabao Cup, Ten Hag confirmed Mount would not be ready but said he was among the players 'progressing'.

United suffered an unprecedented number of injuries - including a worrying amount of muscle issues - last season and the medical department has been overhauled by INEOS.

Mount said of his injury: "During the last game I picked up a minor muscle injury. I've had it checked and it looks like I'll be out for a few games. Leading up to and during pre-season, I worked hard to get my fitness back to where it needs to be and I felt re-energised, sharp and ready.
