Manchester United 'pushing' for £173million Benfica double swoop and more transfer rumours

Manchester United are 'pushing' to sign Benfica duo Joao Neves and Antonio Silva in a double swoop that could cost more than £170million, according to reports.

United have long been linked with a move for 19-year-old Neves, who is already one of Benfica's most important players. The Defensive midfielder has burst onto the scene with regular football since January, having come in to replace the £105million Chelsea-bound Enzo Fernandez.

But according to Sky Sports Germany's Florian Plettenberg, Erik ten Hag is also keen on Neves' defensive teammate Antonio Silva and United will push to sign at least one of them next summer. Silva, 20, already has 61 senior appearances under his belt from central defence and has played seven times for Portugal.

Centre back and central midfield are two key areas that Ten Hag is keen to strengthen over the next two transfer windows, but a move for the pair will not come cheap. Previous reports have suggested Neves has a release clause of around €100m (around £86.5m), and Plettenberg reports that Silva has a similar clause.

Elsewhere, The Evening Standard reports that Tottenham have joined the race to sign OGC Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo.

Ange Postecoglou's side are already planning to add defensive reinforcements in January, having lost Micky van de Ven out for the long-term with a hamstring injury. Fellow centre-back Cristian Romero has been suspended in recent weeks and as a result, Tottenham fielded four full-backs across the defence in Sunday's 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa.
