Manchester United player Harry Maguire breaks silence after England boos

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has taken to social media to reflect on a week playing for his country.

Maguire was subject to bizarre choruses of boos during England's 3-0 friendly victory over Ivory Coast on Tuesday night. The United captain has struggled for form domestically this season, though his performances for the Three Lions in their run to the Euro 2020 final last summer were stellar.

Maguire tweeted just six words alongside a picture of him in action at Wembley, and England flag and love-heart emojis, saying: "Enjoyable week playing for my country." His muted reaction comes after several of his international teammates, as well as boss Gareth Southgate, condemned the boo boys.

"I thought the reception was a joke, an absolute joke,” Southgate said in his post-match interview. “What he's done for us, the way he's performed for England has been phenomenal. I don't get it. We're either all in this together or we're not."

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson added: "I can't get my head around what happened at Wembley tonight (Tuesday). Harry Maguire has been a colossus for England. Without him, the progress made at the last two tournaments would not have been possible.

"To be booed at his home stadium for no reason? What have we become? What happened tonight is just wrong. As someone who wants to win with England I feel fortunate to share a dressing room with him (Maguire). We all feel the same!"
