Manchester United plans for Wrexham pre-season friendly fixture revealed

Manchester United are set to fly a separate squad of players to the US for the pre-season friendly fixture against Wrexham next month.

United are set to face the League Two side at the Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego on Tuesday, July 25 as part of a week-long training camp in San Diego.

The fixture was officially announced back in March with a viral video of Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney attempting to speak with Sir Alex Ferguson via video call.

However, US supporters hoping to see a star-studded United side might need to temper their expectations, with the club set to use the occasion as a chance to give their youth players a chance to impress.

United have already billed the encounter as an academy match, and their team will be made up predominately of the youngsters included in the US tour squad.

The Manchester Evening News understands United are also planning to fly out a number of academy players who are not yet first-team ready for the match, and they will stay in San Diego for the duration of the training week.

Erik ten Hag could still use the match to give any fringe player an opportunity if he believes they are in need of extra match sharpness, but right now the plan is for most of United's senior players to miss the match and focus on the bigger friendly fixtures.

United face Arsenal in New York three days before the Wrexham match and then face Real Madrid in Houston the following day.
