Manchester United must make Ruud van Nistelrooy statement if they sack Erik ten Hag

When Manchester United brought Ruud van Nistelrooy back to Old Trafford this summer it didn't long for the jokes to begin. The former striker was returning as an assistant to Erik ten Hag but he was also primed to take over as interim manager at some point.

Ten Hag survived an end-of-season review by the skin of his teeth but his position has never felt particularly secure and now it is hanging by a thread again. Nine games into the season is earlier than anyone expected but it's no understatement to sat the Dutchman is fighting for his future this week, with tricky trips to Porto and Aston Villa to come before the October international break.

Those two-week gaps are sacking season for managers, especially the breaks in October and November, when the pattern of a season is becoming clearer. After the hiatus in November, the action is non-stop until March and there is little time to take a breath and a make a change.

That makes Ten Hag vulnerable, not just in the next week if he fails to elicit a response in Portugal or in the Midlands, but in November as well if results continue to deteriorate. Van Nistelrooy is waiting in the wings.

This isn't what he would want. His appointment was pushed for by Ten Hag and the 49-year-old has been a close touchline confidant for the current manager. The bookies feel they know what to expect, however, and Van Nistelrooy is also the favourite to be United's next permanent manager.
