Manchester United may struggle to persuade David de Gea replacement to pursue his 'dream'

David de Gea's future at Manchester United is under serious peril.

The mistake at West Ham may have been the straw which broke the camel's back after a season of differing performances for the Spaniard. On the one hand, he remains one of the best shot-stoppers in the Premier League.

On the other, his distribution clearly lags behind what Erik ten Hag wants and his proneness to an error is a deep concern still. Therefore, it is not a surprise United are only looking to keep De Gea around if he accepts a pay decrease.

Whether he agrees to this or not, the Reds could still be on the lookout for a new no.1. MEN Sport understands Anderlecht's Bart Verbruggen is a player of interest to United.

Having been given his debut by Vincent Kompany, Verbruggen has moved from strength to strength and recently received his maiden international call-up with the Netherlands. Manchester City's former captain remains a fan of the 20-year-old and attempted to sign him last summer.

But, Verbruggen has since explained his reasoning for turning his old boss down. Speaking to Voetbal International in February, the Dutchman explained: "[It was] a compliment that Kompany wanted to get me.

"Playing in England is a dream and I could have learned a lot from him and Jelle ten Rouwelaar (Burnley's goalkeeping coach). But I was in the greatest possible luxury position.

"At Anderlecht I have nothing to complain about." Now, the prospect of joining the then Championship side Burnley may not have been one which appealed especially when his current club is competing in Europe.
