Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag drops Jadon Sancho transfer hint and criticises rules over Scott McTominay sale

Erik ten Hag is expecting Jadon Sancho to stay at Manchester United ahead of tonight's transfer deadline.

Juventus have expressed interest in Sancho and United discussed a potential swap deal with Chelsea that would have involved Raheem Sterling but that is unlikely now.

When asked if Sancho would stay, Ten Hag replied: "As I know, yeah.

"He is a player in our squad and we are happy with him. We need a good squad, we need depth in the squad, we have to play many games until January, the new format of Europe. After the break we will play every third day so we absolutely need options."

Ten Hag expressed mixed feelings about Scott McTominay's imminent departure for Napoli in a £30million deal. McTominay arrived in Naples on Thursday and he is set to become United's fifth-joint highest sale.

United partly sold McTominay, 27, as he is an academy player and homegrown sales represent a pure profit under the Premier League's profitability and sustainability rules.

"It’s a little bit mixed," Ten Hag admitted. "I’m very happy for him, it’s also for us mixed because I wouldn’t prefer to lose him because he is Man United in every way.

"He was so important for our team, he was at Manchester United for over 22 years. But unfortunately, it’s the rules. You have to discuss the rules to do sells and obviously homegrown players, academy players, bring more value. It’s not the right thing to do but for everyone, for all parts, it’s a good deal. For Scott, he is happy with it. Of course, for Napoli, a very good player but also for us."
