Manchester United make decision on defender's future

Jonny Evans has signed a new one-year contract with Manchester United.

The 36-year-old rejoined his boyhood club last year and played 30 times, completing the domestic set of honours with United by winning the FA Cup.

Evans said: “I am delighted to have extended my contract at Manchester United for another season. To play for this great club and feel the support from our incredible fans is always a privilege.

“Returning to the club last season was an honour; representing the team on the pitch alongside fantastic teammates under an excellent manager.

“Winning the FA Cup together was an unforgettable experience; I know we can challenge for more trophies in the season ahead.”

Evans made his United debut in 2007 and won three Premier League titles, two League Cups and the Club World Cup before he was sold to West Brom in 2015.

He won the FA Cup with Leicester City in 2021 before coming on in United's stunning final triumph over Manchester City in May.

United are open to signing three centre backs this summer. Everton have rejected two bids from United for Jarrad Branthwaite while the club have a verbal agreement for personal terms with Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt.

Raphael Varane was released last month and Victor Lindelof is available for transfer.
