Manchester United ‘make decision’ on Anthony Martial transfer plus more rumours

Manchester United will reportedly look to move Anthony Martial next summer, whether that is for a fee or for free.

The striker’s contract runs out next summer but contains a 12-month extension clause that the club have the right to trigger. They still may want to offload the Frenchman if they do exercise it so a fee can be reaped.

The Mirror claims Erik ten Hag wants to shake up his striking options. Martial has not completed a full 90 minutes in a Premier League game since January 2021 and could be deemed surplus to requirements by the end of the season.

Martial is currently playing second fiddle to Rasmus Hojlund and Ten Hag may look to bring in a fellow young striker to provide long-term competition. Martial missed more than 30 games due to injury last season and missed the whole of the summer with a hamstring tear that ruled him out of the FA Cup final.

Triggering his contract extension could make it harder to offload him given his unreliability and his argument to command similar bloated wages, slimming down the number of potential suitors.

Meanwhile, Teamtalk claims United are keen on signing left-back Federico Dimarco of Inter. The report says they are keen to bring him in during the January transfer window after tracking the defender for a number of months.

This is thought to be unlikely given the suggestion that club officials are concerned about Financial Fair Play and so will not pursue permanent transfers. It is unlikely Dimarco will move on loan unless a guaranteed summer fee is scheduled.
