Manchester United made the same mistake twice in dreadful defeat to Galatasaray

Bad timing

United were the better team for three-quarters of this game and somehow still managed to lose it, but that's something we're become used to this season.

It's hard to get away from the idea that some of their frailties are mental and the way they conceded soft goals in this defeat was another example of that. Not only that, it was the timing of those concessions that were so costly.

United had their foot down when Rasmus Hojlund gave them the lead in both halves, but they let the visitors equalise after six minutes in the first half and then four minutes in the second half. It's basic stuff.

Erik ten Hag will wonder how his team have lost this game, but they are too open at the back and not good enough individually to cope with the fires they have to put out. The start Hojlund has made to his United career won't be a surprise to those working inside Old Trafford, he felt they had signed a rough diamond that would need some polishing by Ten Hag.

He has had quiet spells since coming into the side and as United expected, there will be games where he isn't at his best, or times when he needs to come out of the team. He didn't fire against Crystal Palace at the weekend.

But he has taken to the Champions League stage and after scoring in the Allianz Arena on matchday one, he was a threat to the Galatasaray defence at Old Trafford and earned his second goal for the club.

Hojlund set the tone for United's bright start, showing good skill in midfield to get on the front
