Manchester United loanee secures first major honour with league title triumph

Manchester United goalkeeper Matej Kovar has been crowned champion of the Czech First League with Sparta Prague.

Kovar started his side's 0-0 draw with Slovacko on Monday night, a result that confirmed their status as champions. Sparta Prague finished the season with 78 points from 34 games, having conceded just 32 goals in the process.

Czech under-21 international Kovar was involved in 25 of those games, playing a major role in his side's success as he notched the first major honour of his career.

After the title was confirmed, Manchester United's official Twitter account posted a message to their on-loan star, writing: "Congratulations to on-loan goalkeeper Matej Kovar, who has been crowned champion of the Czech Republic top flight with Sparta Prague."

Kovar joined United as a 17-year-old in 2018, becoming a regular for the under-18s and then the under-23s. In search of senior experience, the goalkeeper joined Swindon Town on loan in 2020, playing 21 times for the League One outfit.

He joined Burton Albion, also in League One, in January 2022, playing six times during the second half of the season. The goalkeeper then signed a new deal with United before initially agreeing to join Cheltenham before United's struggles to recruit a first-team back-up saw him remain at Old Trafford.

Martin Dubravka joined the Reds on loan from Newcastle United on transfer deadline day, with Kovar heading to Sparta Prague at the start of September.
