Manchester United hold talks with free agent as Matthijs De Ligt alternative eyed

Manchester United have initiated contact with free agent Mario Hermoso as other defensive alternatives are eyed.

Completing a deal for Matthijs de Ligt has proven difficult with Bayern Munich turning down United's joint bid for the centre-back and Noussair Mazraoui. The Dutchman has already agreed personal terms with United but the German giants have informed their counterparts an improved offer will be required.

The Reds are pushing to bring the former Ajax man to Old Trafford before the transfer window closes on August 30 in Germany. Erik ten Hag has already added Leny Yoro to his defensive ranks for a fee in the region of £52m.

De Ligt is a clear favourite for Ten Hag as a reunion is eyed at Old Trafford. But as there has been no breakthrough in negotiations yet, United are not wasting time and are working on other potential deals.

Journalist Maximo Ramirez states the Reds have begun contacts for the former Atletico Madrid defender. As it stands, negotiations are in the early stages and it's believed Hermoso is looking for a three-year salary with a £5million (€6m) salary per year.

The 29-year-old defender has recently left Atletico after five seasons following the expiration of his contract.

Speaking about his client's future, agent Inaki Espizua said: "Mario wants to play in a big league and he doesn’t want to rule out any option. He wants to play for trophies and important goals, we will evaluate any project that may come up for the next few years. This is the player’s aspiration.
