Manchester United have three players to blame for defeat in Europa League final

Finals are often decided by moments and Tottenham Hotspur won their first trophy since 2008 thanks to one of the only moments of polished attacking play in the Europa League showpiece.

Rodrigo Bentancur made a clever run to trigger the move, Pape Matar Sarr sent a cross into the corridor of uncertainty and Brennan Johnson was there to poke home beyond Andre Onana at the front post.

Johnson got in between Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu to execute a scruffy finish. Shaw looked at Dorgu with contempt, which suggested he felt his teammate was responsible for the goal.

The blame game has begun for the Europa League final and Ruben Amorim will take the brunt of it.

Amorim got his team selection wrong, he got his tactics wrong and he offered to quit without receiving any compensation if United believe he is no longer good enough to be their coach.

United are not expected to make a change, although plans are under way to gut the dressing room, despite it probably not being possible to facilitate the type of overhaul that is required.

Outgoings should reach double digits this summer and fresh blood is needed because the majority of players at the club are not good to represent United following an utterly joyless season.

There are question marks around almost every one, including the three who were involved with Tottenham's goal. Shaw has not looked himself since returning from injury, Onana is an error-strewn goalkeeper and Dorgu hasn't made a strong impression in his first few months following his transfer from Lecce.

Dorgu will be cut some slack because he's only just signed for United, but the bulk of the blame for Tottenham's completely avoidable goal in the 41st minute should fall on his shoulders.
