Manchester United have three key selection decisions to make for the Europa League final
With only two Premier League games and less than two weeks before the Europa League final, Ruben Amorim has little time to settle on his Manchester United starting XI.
Injury-permitting, arguably nine selections seem certain: Andre Onana, Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire, Noussair Mazraoui, Patrick Dorgu, Casemiro, Manuel Ugarte, Bruno Fernandes and Rasmus Hojlund.
Amad's impact before and after an ankle injury that sidelined him for two-and-a-half months suggests he will make the cut but Amorim has a delicate balancing act to juggle. He picked eight defensive players in both semi-final legs against Athletic Bilbao and named an unchanged team on Thursday evening.
These are the key selection dilemmas the United head coach has:
Nobody has played more games for United this season than Alejandro Garnacho (55) and the semi-final second leg against Athletic Bilbao was his 14th successive start. However, his place has come under threat with the return of Amad and the number seven shirt not weighing as heavily on Mason Mount.
Amad has to start the final and has come on to play on the right wing and as the No.10 over the past week. The 22-year-old can adapt to either role effectively and it is more a question of where, rather than if, he will start in Bilbao.
Mount has started in a Champions League and European Championship final (albeit during the fake football of the Covid-19 pandemic) and he has the momentum. Yet he last completed 90 minutes in November 2023.
Leny Yoro has had his best spell for United since the March internationals and Harry Maguire, yet to start a final for the club, is a shoo-in in the back three. The identity of the third could be uncertain until as late as next week.
Victor Lindelof was unconvincing in both legs
