Selection dilemma just got even harder

Erik ten Hag said there were a couple of positions still up for grabs ahead of the Premier League opener against Wolves next week, and one of them might have been taken.

The right-back role is the most closely contested at the club, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka sent another timely reminder of his own stake to start.

Wan-Bissaka shone as usual with his fine defensive work but struggled with the progressive play and is not as much of an attacking threat as Diogo Dalot.

It could come down to whether Ten Hag values attacking qualities or defensive ones most against Wolves, but in Wan-Bissaka he certainly has a worthy candidate to start.

A sorry sight

Whatever you make of Harry Maguire as a United player, it is still a desperate sight to see him booed again on the back of another individual error.

The 30-year-old simply has to leave for his own good as much as for United's, and his poor performance against Bilbao was the latest reminder that he just doesn't fit the demands of Ten Hag.

Maguire collected the ball from Wan-Bissaka in a comfortable position but tried to play a pass that was never on. United lost possession, and within seconds they were a goal down.

A fair few boos followed, which seemed harsh, but when you're an £80million centre-back they are occupational hazards. There have been enough warning signs.
