Garnacho secures Wolves start?

The side that started against Lens at Old Trafford had the look of Manchester United's likely XI for the opening weekend of the Premier League season, especially when news came through that Rasmus Hojlund wouldn't be available.

There might have been only a couple of question marks in Erik ten Hag's mind ahead of this weekend and the last two pre-season fixtures. One was at right-back, where Diogo Dalot did little to convince. The other on the left, where Alejandro Garnacho very much took his chance.

With Marcus Rashford now inked in to start the campaign through the middle, Garnacho and Jadon Sancho would have been eyeing up that role on the left. It looked Garnacho's to lose when he started this game and it looked his for sure when it ended.

The 19-year-old was arguably the brightest attacking threat in the United side, driving forward with intent from the left and looking to take on his man on the inside or the out.

The Lens defenders seemed unsure how to deal with him and that only emboldened the teenager to keep running at them. He looked a threat throughout and is surely ready to start the season in the team and ahead of Sancho.

He claimed the assist for Antony's goal and it was noticeable that throughout his run deep into the opposition's half he kept his head up, scanning the spaces around him before picking the right pass to Antony.

A lesson in possession
