Manchester United have a £17m solution to left-back issue but it's a short-term fix

It felt telling that after completing the signing of Noussair Mazraoui for a fee potentially rising to €20m (£17.1m) Manchester United were keen to stress the Moroccan's versatility as a left-back as well as a right-back.

It's a fair assumption that the 26-year-old will get his first minutes for the club on his more unfamiliar flank. United are heading into the new season in the now familiar position of not having a fit left-back available.

Tyrell Malacia continues to be absent from matchday squads and it's now more than a year since he last played due to a serious knee injury and complications around his rehabilitation. There was a predictable groan from United fans when Luke Shaw suffered a calf injury on his return to the club for pre-season, having worked hard to return to action for England over the summer.

Shaw hasn't played for United since injuring his hamstring against Luton on February 18 and he managed just 15 starts in the whole of last season. The 29-year-old has played 30 or more Premier League games in only two of his 10 seasons at Old Trafford and as good as he is when fit, his injury record is placing his future as first-choice left-back in doubt.

Last season Erik ten Hag had to operate without a left-back for large stretches of the season, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka playing that position seven times and Diogo Dalot forced into action there on 15 occasions. Like Mazraoui, Dalot could be described as a versatile full-back, but like Mazraoui he is also clearly a better right-back.
