Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson still expects to join Nottingham Forest despite delays

Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson is convinced he will join Nottingham Forest permanently.

Henderson, 26, is understood to be perplexed by suggestions he could stay at United, who are planning for the England international's sale.

The Manchester Evening News revealed last month Henderson was informed of Forest's intention to buy him after they secured their Premier League survival.

Forest have mooted a possible £30million deal for Henderson, who is recovering from surgery on a thigh strain that has kept him sidelined since January.

Henderson is believed to have returned from holiday but United's complex goalkeeper situation could delay his expected departure.

David de Gea has entered the final week of his contract and United are in the market for a new No.1 goalkeeper with senior figures at the club keen to "move on" from the Spaniard.

United triggered the one-year extensions in the contracts of 'keepers Tom Heaton and Nathan Bishop, who could provide back-up to a new first-choice stopper next term.

Anderlecht goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen is admired by United and David Raya is valued at around £40m by Brentford. Inter Milan goalie Andre Onana has been touted for a reunion with Erik ten Hag, who coached him at Ajax.

Ten Hag has had limited dialogue with Henderson, who rejected the Dutchman's offer to return to the squad midway through last season after Martin Dubravka's loan from Newcastle was cut short.

Henderson has not trained under Ten Hag and he resented former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's decision to renege on a pledge to install him as the No.1.

Ironically, Ajax were interested in signing Henderson on loan in the January transfer
