Manchester United give injury update on Teden Mengi

Manchester United youngster Teden Mengi is expected to make his return from injury later this month.

Mengi went down with an injury, which forced him to be taken off the pitch on a stretcher, in a friendly against Real Betis as part of United's warm-weather training camp in December and the 20-year-old has not played since.

However, Mengi returned to first-team training at Carrington last month and he's now close to making a return for the Under-21s.

The centre-back was set to leave the club on loan in the January window, but his injury prevented a move away and he could now feature for the U21s for the remainder of the campaign, according to academy coach Mark Dempsey.

"He’s done well. He’s been back for a couple of weeks now. He’s not quite back up to what we deem as match fitness," Dempsey told the MEN. "What I imagine is, he’ll turn out for us (U21s) now before the end of the season, probably the Leicester game in 10 days.

"That game looks like an ideal opportunity. You would think so [loan away in the summer], but you never know, what the manager thinks or pre-season can always change plans. Teden has been out, he’s played at a number of clubs, he’s tried and tested.

"So please to god he’ll not get any more injuries. He’s had trouble with some niggly injuries and some long-term injuries, but he’s a good kid, another local kid, who we want to go on, progress and to do well."

Mengi is contracted at United until the summer of 2024.
