Manchester United fans protest in their thousands in anti-Glazer march to Liverpool FC match

Thousands of Manchester United fans marched to Old Trafford ahead of Monday night's Liverpool match in protest of the Glazer family's ownership of the club.

Plans for the march, organised by supporters' group The 1958, gained momentum in recent weeks with United 's poor start to the season, inactivity in the transfer market, and Sir Jim Ratcliffe's stated interest in buying the club.

From early evening, fans were asked to gather at the Tollgate pub half-a-mile away from the stadium, and their numbers steadily grew until a gathering of several thousand sang anti- Glazer chants and released smoke flares as they set off on the march to Old Trafford.

The organisers had stressed the need for the protest to be legal and peaceful, and those taking part followed those pleas, while loudly making their presence felt along the route.

They then gathered on the Old Trafford forecourt outside the Trinity statue and continued the chants until making their way into the stadium for the match.

The turnout was impressive with some estimates of close to 10,000 taking part - a clear signal of the current feelings towards the ownership.
