Manchester United fans apportion blame for recent struggles with Glazers message

Manchester United supporters have left onlookers in little doubt as to who they believe is responsible for recent struggles on the pitch.

The club recorded their worst points return in Premier League history in 2021/22 as they secured Europa League football, only by virtue of West Ham’s final day loss. United suffered a 5-0 humiliation to Liverpool and suffered more heavy defeats later in the season again at Anfield, Manchester City and Brighton.

They also were knocked out of the Champions League in the last 16 and were beaten on penalties by Middlesbrough in the FA Cup. It’s led to calls for a total revamp of the club, with Erik ten Hag tasked to lead the charge following the exits of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.

A number of players have already left upon the expirations of their contracts this month, including Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Jesse Lingard. More could soon follow.

There has been a lot of finger-pointing as to who is to blame for the mess, with players, staff and boardroom members all receiving criticism from supporters. Ultimately, the majority of fans who voted in a Manchester Evening News poll indicated that everyone at the club is responsible.

Voters were asked whether the managers, owners, players, or all of them were the ones who should take the blame. In the end, 56 per cent of the 4,700 fans who voted said it was a collective issue.

Interestingly, less than one per cent said it was only the managers to blame, while 27 per cent believed it was just the players who should shoulder the heat. But maybe unsurprisingly, in a different question within the poll, a huge 81 per cent said they were ‘not very’ confident
