Manchester United defensive stat shows remarkable comparison with Sir Alex Ferguson era

The true extent of Manchester United's decline since Sir Alex Ferguson retired has been highlighted by a worrying statistic.

United have won just three trophies since 2013 and that's ultimately the most telling gauge of the club's regression. Instead of winning trophies, United have accumulated unwanted records in recent years and they received another this weekend.

United performed well against Brentford earlier in the week but they couldn't build on that display at the Amex. Ralf Rangnick's side lost 4-0 against Brighton on the south coast on Saturday afternoon and never looked like threatening the hosts.

Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, Pascal Gross and Leandro Trossard all got onto the scoresheet to condemn United to a miserable defeat.

That result also meant United have conceded four or more goals in 12 Premier League games since Ferguson retired — which is as many times as they did in 810 Premier League games under the legendary Scot.

United have had major problems in defence this season and that statistic highlights the true extent of their problems. United have conceded 56 goals in the Premier League and only Southampton, Watford, Norwich and Leeds have conceded more.
