Manchester United defender Raphael Varane praises Andre Onana debut performance

Raphael Varane is confident Andre Onana will be a positive addition to the Manchester United squad following his competitive debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Reds struggled for large parts of the game against Wolves as Gary O'Neil's new team showed plenty of attacking threat at Old Trafford. Unfortunately for them, they found Onana in brilliant form.

United's new signing made a string of good stops as the visitors were kept at bay. Eventually, Onana's display would be rewarded at the other end as Varane popped up to head home the winner 15 minutes from time.

Speaking to BBC Sport after the final whistle, Varane insisted it would take some time to develop an understanding with the Cameroonian goalkeeper but early signs were promising.

"It’s a good start for him," the centre-back explained. "We need time to build that connection on the pitch which is normal. He’s a very good player so he’ll help the team this season."

It was not all plain sailing for the shot stopper though. Hearts were in mouths for United fans in the dying embers of the match when Onana clattered into substitute Sasa Kalajdzic inside the area.

Referee Simon Hooper decided not to give a penalty and his decision was not overturned by VAR. After the match, O'Neil claimed PGMOL had apologised to him for what they deemed to be a mistake.

Reflecting on the mood around the camp after the win, Varane added there was some areas for improvement but the atmosphere is good. "The team spirit is already good but we want to improve," he concluded.
