Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has already laid out his route back from injury

It is not the first time that Lisandro Martinez has missed the final few matches of a season through injury. In fact, the now Manchester United man missed Ajax's last seven matches last term with a muscle issue.

Despite this, it certainly does not make it any easier for the player. The Argentine defender has enjoyed a superb debut campaign at Old Trafford, and his partnership with Raphael Varane at the heart of defence has been impressive.

Martinez knew straight away that the injury he suffered in the 2-2 draw with Sevilla was a bad one, with it later being confirmed that he would play no further part in the season. He will, of course, miss the Europa League quarter-final second leg clash with the Spanish outfit, but Erik ten Hag's side will still believe they have enough to progress to the next round.

For the 25-year-old, it is extremely disappointing that he will not have the chance to continue his strong form to the end of the season. After a difficult start to life with the Reds, Martinez has gone on to prove his doubters wrong. In September, he hit back at those who criticised his early performances at United.

A number of pundits claimed the centre-back was too short to operate in the Premier League after a couple of tough early showings against Brighton and Brentford. Martinez was, understandably, keen to defend himself, but he also admitted that he was simply focused on himself.
