Manchester United could be about to make their biggest strength even better

After 12 years of continuity, there will be a changing of the guard between the posts at Manchester United this summer.

After 545 appearances in United colours, David de Gea's exit was confirmed on Saturday afternoon when he took to social media to issue an emotional farewell. It marked the end of an era, most of which was highly successful and littered with fond memories.

However, at the same time, it was the perfect juncture for both United and De Gea to go their separate ways, allowing the club to move on with its rebuilding process under Erik ten Hag. The Dutchman, over time, wants to change how United play and that starts with a goalkeeper comfortable in possession.

De Gea, for all of his shot-stopping expertise, lacks in ability in possession. He was not the world-class distributor that United both want and need.

To address that issue, however, the Reds are looking to get a deal wrapped up for Andre Onana. United football director John Murtough has been in Italy to hold talks with Inter Milan about the prospect of signing the Cameroon international.

Discussions are believed to be going well and advancing, meaning United have ambitions of making him their second summer signing. Should they get a deal over the line, it would be a statement signing that shows they mean business, both in the short-term and the long-term.
