Manchester United confirm Sofyan Amrabat's new squad number

Manchester United have confirmed Sofyan Amrabat will wear the No.4 shirt for the duration of his loan spell from Fiorentina.

The Moroccan defensive midfielder arrived from the Serie A club on deadline day after completing a season-long switch to Old Trafford. During his stint across football so far, Amrabat has not worn the No.4 before at club level.

For his national team, since 2019, Amrabat has worn the No.4 jersey however his links to the number have been represented in his domestic career. At FC Utrecht, where he played under Erik ten Hag, he wore 44 while at Hellas Verona and Fiorentina Amrabat turned out in the 34.

Sadly for Amrabat, he was unable to take on the No.34 at United because this is currently worn by out of favour midfielder Donny van de Beek. Most recently, the No.4 was worn by Phil Jones who departed in the summer after his contract expired.

Legendary captain Steve Bruce notably wore the No.4 during his playing days at the club while central midfielder Owen Hargreaves wore it during his spell in the red half of Manchester. After arriving at United, Amrabat said: "It is a huge honour to become a Manchester United player. I’ve had to be patient for this moment but I’m someone who always listens to my heart and now I am representing the club of my dreams.

"I am a passionate player; I want to bring that energy to the squad, and I will put everything into every action I take for the team. I know exactly how Erik ten Hag likes to work and what he needs from his players.

"His coaching and guidance developed me so much as a player earlier in my career; I know that he will help to bring out the best of my abilities so that I can help the group to
