Manchester United confirm Erik ten Hag contract extension

Manchester United have triggered the one-year option in Erik ten Hag's contract.

Ten Hag's previous deal was due to expire in 2025 but United had the option of an additional year that tey have now exercised.

United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his Ineos colleagues were planning to sack Ten Hag until United stunned Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

Ten Hag has won the League Cup and the FA Cup since he took over at United in May 2022 and the team finished third in the Premier League in his first season. However, United plummeted to eighth last term - their worst finish in 34 years.

United also confirmed they are set to refresh their coaching staff. The club are expected to add former PSV Eindhoven manager Ruud van Nistelrooy and Go Ahead Eagles coach Rene Hake to their backroom staff.

Ten Hag said: "I am very pleased to have reached agreement with the club to continue working together. Looking back at the past two years, we can reflect with pride on two trophies and many examples of progression from where we were when I joined.

"However, we must also be clear that there is still lots of hard work ahead to reach the levels expected of Manchester United, which means challenging for English and European titles.

"In my discussions with the club, we have found complete unity in our vision for reaching those goals, and we are all strongly committed to making that journey together."
