Manchester United confirm appointment of Ruben Amorim as manager as start date revealed

Ruben Amorim has been officially appointed as the manager of Manchester United.

Amorim was convinced to become Erik ten Hag's replacement at Old Trafford and joins from Sporting Lisbon, where he masterminded their first league title for 19 years.

The 39-year-old was viewed as a potential successor to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City but has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with United following Ten Hag's departure.

United agreed acompensation package to appoint Amorim and he will move to Manchester with Sporting sitting at the top of the Portuguese top-flight. However, Amorim will begin work on November 11 and take charge of his first game against Ipswich Town on November 24.

Amorim must serve a notice period at Sporting and the expectation is he will be joined by coaches Carlos Fernandes and Adelio Candido, which will be communicated in due course.

The statement confirming Amorim's appointment read: "Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Rúben Amorim as Head Coach of the men’s first team, subject to work visa requirements.

He will join until June 2027 with a club option of an additional year once he has fulfilled his obligations to his current club. He will join Manchester United on Monday 11 November.
