Manchester United confident on contract renewals as Erik ten Hag receives Raphael Varane boost

Here are your Manchester United evening headlines on Wednesday, May 3.

Manchester United are hopeful of announcing more contract renewals before the end of the season.

United are in discussions over new terms for David de Gea, Marcus Rashford and Diogo Dalot, having reached agreements with Luke Shaw and Alejandro Garnacho.

Club sources believe new terms for Rashford, 25, could take more time to finalise but United are aiming to have the 32-year-old De Gea under a new contract before his existing one expires on June 30.

United triggered the one-year extensions in the contracts of Rashford and Dalot in December. Dalot, 24, has started in 36 of United's 55 games this season while Rashford has scored a career-best 29 goals in 51 games.

Raphael Varane is expected to return before the end of the season for Manchester United but will not be available for their upcoming games against Brighton and West Ham.

Varane sustained an injury in the Europa League quarter-final first leg against Sevilla three weeks ago but is closer to a return than Scott McTominay, who has also been sidelined for three weeks.

Alejandro Garnacho has resumed squad training but United manager Erik ten Hag suggested the Brighton match on Thursday night is too soon for the Argentine. Garnacho has not played since March 19 due to an ankle injury.

"Prognosis: Rapha is closer than Scott McTominay in this moment but still for the coming two games they are not available," Ten Hag said.
