Manchester United complete Tahith Chong transfer to Birmingham City

Manchester United have announced that Tahith Chong has been sold to Birmingham City in a £1.5m deal.

The 22-year-old attacker rejoins the Blues, this time permanently, on a four-year contract. Chong played 20 times for Birmingham while on loan at St Andrew's last season, scoring twice and assisting four times.

His momentum at the Championship club last term was disrupted by two significant injuries, the first of which required groin surgery. The winger was selected for United ’s pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia, and featured in the final friendly of the summer in the 1-1 draw with Rayo Vallecano.

Across three games, he started once and played 152 minutes, but has been deemed surplus to requirements by Erik ten Hag. He leaves the Reds having made 16 senior appearances and provided two assists.

West Brom had made a late push for the youngster, who was in the final year of his contract, but Birmingham got his signature due to their willingness to facilitate a permanent move with the Baggies only interested in a loan switch.

Speaking upon his move back to Birmingham, Chong told in-house media : "I am excited to be back. Especially after last season, I have always felt Birmingham City had been my second home.

"It's nice because I came in, I know everyone already. Seeing familiar faces.

“Everyone at the club, the staff, the players and the fans - everyone made me feel so welcome, a family club. I feel ready to go. I am very excited to get going. It's great to be back."
