Manchester United can't sign Kobbie Mainoo's dream midfield partner – and he knows why

Having added a central defender and a striker to their ranks so far this summer, focus has now switched to bolstering the midfield for Manchester United.

Despite his glittering debut season at Old Trafford in 2022/23, Casemiro regressed last term, meaning the Reds have little choice but to invest in a new defensive midfielder.

The Brazilian, 32, failed to bring the same level of control to the table that he had produced in his maiden season at the club and his passing was often sloppy. He also failed to supply the same degree of defensive nous he so often provided in 2022/23.

United, more often than not, relied on the brilliance of Kobbie Mainoo in the engine room last season, with the youngster producing a catalogue of eye-catching performances. As a result, he is guaranteed to be a regular starter in midfield alongside Bruno Fernandes this term.

As last season unfolded, Mainoo established himself as a forward-thinking No.8 who wants to get on the ball and carry it into advanced areas. He is eager to glide forward, going on slaloming runs, to advance the ball and get United up the pitch.

With Fernandes set to play in the No.10 role as the attacking midfielder, United need a world-class operator in the defensive midfield role to complement the qualities of both him and Mainoo. They need a younger version of the 2022/23 Casemiro, who would often break up play and set United on their way from deep.
