Manchester United can set a new club record vs Chelsea to achieve Erik ten Hag's first target

Though Saturday's 1-0 win over Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium is unlikely to live long in the memory of any Manchester United supporter, it was a victory of great significance.

It has put the Reds on the cusp of securing a top-four finish and qualifying for the Champions League next season. All they need is one point from their last two games to join Manchester City, Arsenal and Newcastle United in Europe's premier club competition.

It means tonight's rearranged clash with Chelsea at Old Trafford - originally scheduled to take place last month - could be a momentous occasion in the club's campaign. Despite ending their trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup back in February, clinching Champions League qualification will mean more to most.

Manager Erik ten Hag, right from the very outset of his tenure, highlighted the importance of getting the club back into the Champions League. United finished sixth in the Premier League last term and swapped playing in Europe on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for Thursday evenings as a result.

"I said this is the project, to bring Man United back on top, but also we have to accept the current situation we are in," said Ten Hag, speaking in his first-ever United interview a year ago. "First of all, Man United belong in the Champions League, so that will be the first target."

With two Premier League games left, United can almost reach out and touch Europe's premier club competition. The Champions League theme tune is already within earshot and some of the game's most gifted and famous faces will be visiting Old Trafford again next season.
