Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has already shown why he might be tempted by Jonny Evans transfer
It would have to go down as one of the most unlikely transfers of the summer window and it remains unlikely, but the possibility of a permanent Manchester United reunion with Jonny Evans shouldn't be ruled out just yet.
The 35-year-old made his first appearance for the club in eight years against Lyon at Murrayfield on Wednesday, but while the rest of the senior squad jetted out to New York for United's pre-season tour, Evans is to head straight to San Diego to train with the academy and play against Wrexham on Tuesday.
It is a sign of the professionalism and quality of Evans that he is seen as someone who can have a significant influence on the young players coming through the ranks, especially the central defenders. The under-21s already have Tom Huddlestone as a player-coach, but Evans is very much still looking to prolong his own career.
His return to United began with a few sessions at Carrington to maintain his fitness last week, but Erik ten Hag quickly spotted a more formal arrangement that could benefit both. With Rhys Bennett injured and Eric Bailly on his way out, there was a shortage of centre-backs that Evans could help with.

He produced a smooth 45 minutes against the Ligue 1 side in Edinburgh, showing quality on the ball and the experience accumulated through more than 350 Premier League appearances and 100 international caps.
