Manchester United board urged to do what Ajax did with Erik ten Hag

Manchester United’s board have been urged to follow Ajax’s lead and show long-term support for manager Erik ten Hag.

The new United boss has a huge summer ahead as he begins the rebuild at Old Trafford following a disastrous 2021/22 season. The 52-year-old has already got down to work ahead of his first season in charge, having been unveiled by the club more than a fortnight ago.

Having appointed Mitchell van der Gaag and Steve McClaren as Ten Hag's assistants, the past week has seen the departures of Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata confirmed, while more could follow over the coming weeks. The former Ajax boss has also identified a couple of his early transfer targets in Frenkie de Jong and Jurrien Timber ahead of the opening of the window.

Ten Hag will be aiming to replicate the success he enjoyed during his time in Amsterdam, having re-established his former club as a force in Europe. And former Ajax midfielder Marciano Vink believes he can achieve similar at United, but only if he receives the same support he had in the Netherlands.

“The perfect man for the job, Ten Hag did a tremendous job at Ajax and he was backed by Marc Overmars — that’s really important for him to succeed in Man United by the board and the technical director,” Vink told ESPN FC. “He did a tremendous job, four-and-a-half-years he gave Ajax a face again, he left the club on a high so I hope he does really well at Man United and (hope) he gets time as well.
