Manchester restaurant where employee was 'allegedly assaulted' stripped of its licence as boss slammed for having 'no control'

An employee was allegedly assaulted by the wife of a business partner at a Chorlton restaurant just weeks into its opening, a licensing panel has heard.

The reported assault took place at Sky Lounge on Barlow Moor Road in November and saw the victim go to hospital to be treated for anxiety, a Manchester City Council licensing hearing was told on Monday (January 22). Police told the hearing the victim 'did not pursue' the investigation after the crime was initially reported and owners denied an 'assault' took place.

However, the incident was one in a catalogue of alleged issues at the bar, which started with 'neighbouring residents saying they have experienced overspilling waste bins on the pavement, parking across drives and on double yellows', council officers said.

However, bosses at the restaurant said they were complying with the law, employed 25 people, and were well-liked by the community and customers alike. One of those customers was Manchester City and England star Phil Foden, who visited in December — with the restaurant showing off his visit on Instagram.

Instagram was also the platform in which Sky Lounge advertised events would go on ‘until 11pm’, according to Licensing Officer Gemma Hunt, as well as promoting a New Year’s Eve celebration - despite an agreed strict 9.30pm closing time. There were also allegations the venue opened before 11am and after 9.30pm on other days.

The panel also heard there was allegedly 'an assault on a staff member on November 15 by the wife of one of the business partners', with the victim going to hospital to be 'treated for an anxiety attack after the incident', Mrs Hunt added.
