Manchester Pride issues statement after small counter-protest during parade

The Manchester Pride Parade was met by a small section of counter protestors today. Organisers of the celebration said they were 'aware of protests' taking place in conjunction with the parade on Saturday (August 24) and were 'working closely with the authorities to ensure people's safety'.

One of the UK’s largest LGBTQ+ celebrations, the party will continue today with the annual Pride parade through the city which began at 12pm. But shortly before the parade began, a small group of protestors were spotted near to the event but finished their demonstration rather quickly and the parade was able to continue.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, Manchester Pride said: "We are aware of a protest taking place in the city centre. We are talking to the authorities and our safety teams to ensure the safety of our visitors.

"Manchester Pride respects the fundamental right to peaceful protest and free expression. We remain focused on providing an inclusive, safe, and celebratory environment for all attendees and participants of the Manchester Pride Festival.

"We're pleased to update that the protest has concluded. We appreciate their adherence to the agreed window for their demonstration, ensuring the safety and well-being of all present. The Parade is now continuing as scheduled."

The city centre is a colourful scene today as thousands have flooded in to celebrate this year's festival. Festivities began last night with performances from Jessie J, Gok Wan and The Greatest Showman star Keala Settle in the Gay Village.
