Manchester court updates LIVE as more suspects accused of disorder in riots
More suspects are due in court today (Friday) in connection with disorder in Greater Manchester last weekend.
Five suspects appeared before a judge at Manchester and Salford Magistrates' Court yesterday after violent scenes erupted in Manchester city centre and in Bolton last Saturday and Sunday. Disorder broke out at an 'Enough is Enough' protest in Piccadilly Gardens, while missiles were thrown at police outside Bolton town hall as demonstrators and counter-protesters clashed.
A protest in Newton Heath also erupted into scenes of violence on July 31, with a man dragged off a bus and assaulted and rocks and bottles pelted at riot police. Demonstrators gathered outside a hotel before the group spilled onto Oldham Road.
Yesterday four men - Paul Smith, Joseph Ley, Marcus Foster and Oliver Chapman - admitted their part in the trouble. A judge described the 'shameful and frightening civil disorder' the region had experienced.
