Manchester city centre tram crash LIVE as area taped off with firefighters on scene

Firefighters have rushed to Manchester city centre this afternoon after a car was hit by a tram.

Part of the tram line through St Peter's Square is currently closed. The crash happened on Oxford Street, between the St Peter's Square and Deansgate-Castlefield Metrolink stops.

Images from the scene show a car which appears to have been hit by a tram as it drove along Oxford Street. The area around the incident has now been taped off.

Police and paramedics have also been called to the scene. It is currently unknown whether anybody was injured in the crash.

The tram line through St Peter's Square is one of Manchester's busiest, with journeys from Eccles, Altrincham and East Didsbury all travelling through the area.

In a statement, the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said three fire engines were called to the scene where one man has been taken to hospital.

A spokesperson said: “Just before 2pm this afternoon (Saturday 1st June), three fire engines from Manchester Central, Salford Central and Moss Side fire station were called to reports of a vehicle crashing into a tram near St Peter’s Square, Manchester.

“Crews arrived quickly at the scene. Firefighters used stabilising equipment and small tools to make the vehicle and tram safe. One man who was in the vehicle has been taken to hospital by colleagues from North West Ambulance Service.

“Firefighters have been in attendance for around forty minutes and are still at the scene.”
