Manchester Arena bombing victims - the 22 people who lost their lives in the attack

Next month will mark five years since the Manchester Arena bombing - a terror attack that shocked the city and the nation to its core. Terrorist Salman Abedi killed himself and 22 others when he detonated a suicide bomb in his backpack as mainly young concert-goers were leaving an Ariana Grande concert on May 22, 2017.

Those who died came from different walks of life and from as far afield as the Hebrides; schoolchildren, students, mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, working men and women. The youngest victim was only eight years old.

Hundreds of others were injured in the attack and many were treated in hospitals across Greater Manchester. In August 2020 Hashem Abedi, the brother of Salman Abedi, was found guilty of 22 counts of murder. He was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 55 years.

A public inquiry into the attack adjourned last month, with two reports on the background to the bombing, including the radicalisation of Manchester-born Abedi, and the emergency services response due to be published later this year. Ahead of the five-year anniversary next month, a new two-part ITV documentary which the broadcaster says will explore how the truth of what happened is finally emerging.

Worlds Collide: The Manchester Bombing will be on ITV at 9pm on Monday - tonight - and Thursday and available to watch on catch-up on the ITV Hub. It will feature interviews from the families of those who lost their lives and delve into the role of MI5 and the emergency services, hearing directly from those there on the night and examining why decisions taken left victims helpless inside.
