Manchester Airport issues update on scanners following liquid rules U-turn

Manchester Airport has urged passengers to stick to the current 100ml limit for hand luggage liquids as it continues to install new security scanners. The airport said it was making “good progress” in enrolling the new technology, with the equipment expected to be fully operational in 2025.

It has emphasised that nothing has changed at Manchester Airport when it comes to hand luggage rules. It comes after the government reintroduced 100ml limits for six UK airports which had successfully installed the Next Generation Security Checkpoints (NGSC).

London City, Aberdeen, Newcastle, Leeds/Bradford, Southend and Teesside airports all had the technology in place by the Government’s June 1 deadline. Several airports including Manchester and Heathrow had been granted extensions to install the technology - so Manchester remains on track.

But at midnight on Sunday, June 9 the liquid limits were temporarily reintroduced for the six aforementioned airports. A Department for Transport spokesperson said: “This temporary move is to enable further improvements to be made to the new checkpoint systems and will only affect a small number of passengers.

“For most passengers, security measures will remain unchanged. Passengers should continue to check security requirements with their departure airport before travelling.”

The U-turn can be confusing for passengers ahead of the busy summer holiday period, as many travellers will have assumed the scanners would be in place. TUI also issued a warning to its passengers in light of the rule change.
