Manchester Airport could ask for more time to install new scanners that would end 100ml liquid rule

Manchester Airport could ask for more time to install new security scanners that would end the need for the 100ml restriction on liquids in hand luggage, it has been reported. The Government had given airports a deadline of June 1 to fit the high-tech measures.

But The Times has reported airport bosses have been informed they have until the end of January to ask for an extension to the target. It's thought airports will be given until next year to introduce the new technology.

A source told the paper: "The hubs have until the end of the month to request an extension to the June deadline. Conversations have been taking place in the last week and ministers are getting ready to make a decision on next steps."

The next generation of scanners, which use CT (computer tomography) scans rather than X-rays, could mark the end of the 100ml liquid limit, and the need to remove toiletry bottles and laptops from luggage for security checks. They are already widely used in countries including the US and Australia, and some UK airports such as London City and Teesside.

It's thought some of the UK's larger airports will ask for more time to install the new scanners, meaning the old equipment could still be in use this summer. Aviation commentator Sally Gethin told the BBC: "[The scanners] are very heavy. Sometimes the floors in the actual terminal have to be reinforced."

Manchester Airport has been contacted for a comment.
