Manager Gareth Ainsworth promises tough analysis after Gillingham’s slow start in Bromley draw
A dramatic comeback saved Gillingham at Bromley but the manager admits there’ll be some uncomfortable viewing during the analysis early this week.
The Gills got off to a torrid start on Saturday, conceding twice in the opening 12 minutes, and it could have been worse as the hosts dominated the start of the game. Boss Gareth Ainsworth will be keen to point out the errors to his team ahead of their preparations for a weekend match against an improving Notts County.
“We've got to sort that first 20 minutes out,” said the Gills boss. “The video review could be a little bit nasty.
“Usually, me and the analysts look at it Monday, and then we'll present it Tuesday. We'll see that first 20 minutes and what we can do better.
“But then I will show them how much confidence you must have coming back away at Bromley, a team that are right up there.”
Nicke Kabamba scored the opener for Bromley in the seventh minute and five minutes later Michael Cheek headed in a second.
Cheek was a threat all afternoon.
“He’s a top striker and does what he does,” said Ainsworth.
“We knew we had to mark him in the box. I think he's peeled off one defender and got over the top of another defender like he does, like good strikers do.
“He’s a very good player, and he'll score plenty of goals this season, as he always does. But it's the nature of the game.”
Reflecting on that first 12 minutes, Ainsworth said: “I couldn't believe it. Honestly, [I was] a bit shell-shocked.”
The Gills had only conceded three goals in their first six games before the visit to south London.
He added: “We needed to be better from the start. We need to be more solid and probably weather the storm better than we did.
“It was a bit of mayhem. Even experienced (goalkeeper) Glenn
